Well, season 1 covers volumes 1-4. Season 2 kind of covers volume 5-8 (if you squint at it in one eye and close off the other, anyway). So logically, season 3 can't happen until volume 12 has been released. UNLESS the author gives them some sort of outline/cheatsheat/GODLY GUIDANCE to let them make up their own ending to it (see the difference between Fullmetal Alchemist and FMA: Brotherhood). Why did Tabane create the IS system: She seems to be playing a game with her friends and family. Granted, she's insanely smart, so she might just be bored and want some excitement, but I think she's got an overall plan herself. I can understand she made the IS system because she thought it was cool, but.she also comes across as a bit of a schemer.

The author might be trying (or be pressured) to put together a bit more growth and move towards a grand plot that can conclude the series. Well, in the LN, after the second golem attack, right before the World Purge event, Ichika takes Byakushiki to the IS developer (whose name escapes me without checking) for repairs/upgrades. I can't remember seeing the World Purge OVA, so I don't know if they duplicated it there.

Technically, I suppose since Byakushiki uses the same fold-out armor (FOA) that Akatsubaki does, then it might be a 4th gen. But since the FOA is limited to just the sword, it would probably be evaluated as a prototype 4th gen, more along the lines of a 3.5. I wouldn't hesitate to suspect that Tabane has either directly hacked anyone and everyone to get any interesting data/ideas, so she may have seen the original designs for the FOA for Byakushiki and ran it out to its conclusion ahead of them.
